Will a misfiring engine 'kill' the cat?

Hi all My neighbours petrol Vectra has had a bad misfire on damp mornings for some time - frequently starts on two cylinders will pick up to three and then go on all four - however before getting to all four it was taking a minute or so and pumping out some very petrol smelling fumes.

The misfire was completely cured by fitting new plugs and leads - now he's looking to sell the car and I'm interested - the question is though - will the flow of unburnt petrol through the cat have ruined it ?

Thanks

GT

there's a possibility it would have, but generally its long term before any damage is noticed, we've had a customer with a misfire for nearly a year now as he's too tight to get it fixed and his cat is still ok !

did yer know putting petrol on your cat and setting fire to it makes them go woof !

Unlikely to have done any damage as the cat takes a while to get up to temperature and start working, the unburnt fuel will just have passed harmlessly through.

That's an age-old question, that. Generally misfiring won't kill the cat, but curiosity has been known to.

No GM did that at the design stage.

It's a Vectra fer Geds sake, don't do it man.

That's true, I once cut a cat open to examine the insides.

I did that when I worked for a vets as a teenager. During a quiet spell he chucked me a dead cat and told me I could take it apart to see how it worked. Or not, since it was dead.

Was there a small jar of bits left over when you put it back together?

Of course. Didn't find out what the green wobbly bit was for, either.

A 25% misfire (i.e. one cylinder) at high speed and load conditions- eg a motor way run where the cat is at full operating temperature will burn it out from the raw fuel passing through it causing it to over heat and melt. I've seen several.

A miss with the cat cold or when driven slowly in town for instance is unlikely to knacker it, but will knock some life from it.
