I have a vectra R reg, with rust around the fixed latch thing for the rear door (the bit bolted to the outside of the wheel arch). I can provide a link to pictures if you don't know what I am on about.
If I undo the torx bolts, will the nuts fall off into the bodywork somewhere, or are they captive / a threaded plate?

they are on a plate, it will stay there unless you are very unlucky

Probably a captive threaded plate. Unless the nuts are accessible, IME similar fastenings are always captive. Mike.
