97 M Edition

May 14, 2006 5 Replies

Thanks for the feedback on the "What Now?" thread. The garage is ready.

Found a 97 M edition with 55k miles, "excellent condition". Meeting with owner today, hopefully.

Any thoughts on what I might want to look for, ask about, etc. would be enormously appreciated.

This isn't the $27,000 one that you test-drove is it? ;-)

Just the usual, I would carfax the VIN and have it thoroughly inspected for wreck repairs/mechanical issues and try to get a service history on it. The car is now almost 10 years old and has only been driven about

6,000 miles a year. This suggests that it was very likely not a daily driver. If the A/C was run fairly often, there shouldn't be any problems, but if this was a weekend-only/fair weather machine, then it could have potential A/C leaking problems waiting for you from the seals drying out. I have seen this on a few low-mileage/older cars.

Good luck, I like all 4 of the first generation "M" editions. (1994-1997)

Thanks Pat - it's offered at 9K so it's a tad less than the 06 I test drove! And BTW I made my husband test drive the 06 and he had two things to say: he loves the car, and he got leered at while driving it (by 2 women and one guy).

9K sounds a bit high even with the low miles. I would try to negotiate that down quite a bit.

Miata leering knows no gender boundaries. :-)

I guess it is too late now, but
