Check engine, loss of power

Have a 2000 MX5. had a problem with check engine light and was told bad gas. ran fine next day but only the next day. I gutted the catalytic converter and replaced the lower oxygen sensor. the check engine light may come on or stay off. but the motor doesn't have the power it should. My mechanic put it on the scope but can't get the codes from Mazda dealer. could the loss of power be from jumped timing and where can a guy get the computer codes?
