4G15 ignition timing

I have a 1997 Proton Persona which has many Mitsubishi parts: the engine is the Mitsubishi 4G15 12 valve 1468 cc. I think it's all very similar to a Colt. Suddenly the engine has started to severely misfire when I accelerate. I have _advanced_ the distributor by about 5 degrees which has reduced the effect, so now the car is driveable, but now the engine pinks. (Is that a British English word? I mean I get a high pitched tapping when I accelerate uphill in a high gear.) What has gone wrong?

Timing belt was changed about a year ago, when the head was planed after a head gasket failure; all has been OK till this week

I always though that was effect was ping ...

Several possibilities: a) you have a bad batch of gasoline. b) a sensor has malfunctioned. Is the ECU putting out any error code? Is the Check Engine Light on? Try unplugging the battery for about 30 seconds to reset the ECU, and readjust the timing to 5 BTDC c) your catalytic converter could have failed, which will make the engine run really rich. Normally you will get an O2 sensor error code when this happens. d) the cam belt has jumped a tooth.
