Differential Leak

Jul 23, 2007 2 Replies

I have a 1996 Miata. I notice a leak in the differential today. It's where the right stub axle connects to the differential. What's mostly likely costing this leak?

I found any article in miata.net to replace the differential seal, but I can only find this part on line for a 1991 Miata. I'm guessing my torsen differential has a different part or name for this seal. Does anyone know what that may be?

Bad axle seal like you thought, most likely.

Mazda South or Trussville Mazda should be able to get that part number for you. The 1991 model has 4 bolts attaching the stub shaft to the differential. On your's, it pops in and out.

I would check the fluid level right away if you have not already done so.

I found the part at miata.net. In the garage section, there's a set of part reference documents for NA Miatas. I will check the fluid level if I need to drive this car before I can fix it. I am going to call my local dealerships today to get this part and hopefully fix it today or tomorrow.
