Fuel smell

As of late we are experiencing an awkward fuel smell in the interior and the boot of our Miata right after filling her up. We take care not to spill any fuel, but this does not seem to solve the problem. Apparently, there is no leak, since our garage floor stays clean. Should we worry? What could be wrong?

If your garage does not have any marks, it's prolly becuase the fuel will have evaporated, Fuel will evapourate at room temperature and it will not leave any marks. I would get your tank checked out, because if you smell fuel then there is a higher chance of an explosion.

Make sure you are not topping up the tank. Once the pump cuts off, stop fueling. What year is your Miata? I remember some of them (99's ?) had a problem with venting but not 100% sure. Even my 92 can't be topped up, otherwise it will get the gasoline smell.

A couple of years ago I was getting a fuel smell after my Miata had sat ovenight. I also did not see anything on the garage floor, but after some searching around found that one of the hoses connected to the fuel filter was leaking. The only evidence was a little staining on the guard that covers the filter. The fuel filter was due for a change anyway, so I changed out the hoses at the same time and no more smell.

I'd get it checked out as soon as possible.

One of the pressure lines on the '90 Miata was leaking and I experienced the smell of fuel inside the car. In my case, it was one of the lines that I reach through to get to the oil filter. After I replaced it with a similar length of high pressure hose, it was fine.

In this case, of course, it exhibited the symptom at all times.
