My 1990 "A" doesn't have headset speakers or boxes, just a cut out in the foam. Do I need to find the boxes? Any other ways to deal with this?

No, the speakers just press into the foam and it will all hold in place once you zip the seat back up. It's about as easy as can be, I found zipping the seats back up to be the hardest part.
Have you checked for a wiring harness in the seat?

There's also 'phasing' problems with the OEM wiring if you do find it so, do some research on miata.net on that. I believe the NA stereo guru's name is Jeff Anderson and he's been fixing those radios and helping people fix their wiring for ages, he knows all the ins and outs.
Good luck, Chris

I have read about the pahsing issue, but this shouldn't affect me as I am going to be running all new wiring to the head unit. The car does NOT have the factory speaker wires running under the seats. Thanks!
I found that adding a "separator ring" between the speaker and the head rest material helped.
I just took a piece of PVC and cut a ~3/4" section, and made a couple of notches for the speaker mounting "ears".
I found that the sound is much cleaner (no buzz) with them not pressed against the seat material
The seats on my '96M had a plastic box that the speaker screwed into. This box then fit into the top part of the seat. I am guessing that this is the same for all of the M1 leather seats.
I don't notice any buzz with them pressed in on the cloth seats, but my hearing was damaged by too many bad 1980's spandex wearing hair band concerts, so I might just not be hearing it. :-)
