Is winter a better time to go Miata shopping?

With my daily driver Honda getting more and more problems, I'm hoping other problems at the work place get resolved soon and I can actually think of making a move. I was wondering if a fun/roadster/ragtop is easier to snare in the bad weather season rather than in the summer. Eh?

In the US, the new Miatas come out in the early spring (March/April). At that time, you can usually get pretty decent deals on new models from the previous year, though you might not get to pick/choose colors and options. If you're shopping for a privately offered used one, you might find an owner who needs to get rid of one in a hurry, and demand is certainly lower in the winter -- at least in Minnesota :).

If I were selling a used one, I sure wouldn't do it during the winter...

Ya, I think it depends allot on what climate you live in. Here in the Houston area, winter is as good a top down driving season as any and sometimes much better that a hot summer.

Yep. I just bought a used Miata in Florida, and I'm finding some excellent top-down weather this winter. I'm actually leery about using the car in the summer, it is so hot here.

Well, OK, I should have qualified it by the geography. No, I'm not in Minnesota! Nor Texas or Florida, but "sunny" California (San Francisco area) where we presently have winds of 40-60mph and heavy rain. It's been raining all week, only Saturday is due a break, then more rain next week!

But you caught my point. Let's hope the cash rolls in and I can think seriously, eh?

Rivergoat,

I just bought a 99 Miata 3 weeks ago and got in 1 week of top-down driving here in SF Bay Area... but even with the top up, it's more fun to drive then any thing else under $50K and 5000 cc.

As for buying in winter, it seems to me you will save a few $$, but may not have quite the selection of private sellers since people may not want to bother showing a car in bad weather. You should be looking, however, because the right one can come along anytime.

I hope you are using Craigslist. That was the best source for me, and I eventually got a good deal on a great car.

Good luck, Walt

Hey Walt:

Thanks for the tips/info. Yeah, I know all about Craigs List! That's how I found the place I'm living in! Why not use it for a car as well

*:) I need to see some issues at work resolved before I can be serious. Hoping that happens and that tax time treats me well....I'll just be thinking about making one less MX-5 available on the market ;)
