1989 260E ongoing issue with stalling.

A bit of a saga to say the least. If I leave the car garaged for a lengthy time like a week, It will start and drive OK for a few kilometres then it will stall. Sometimes it will restart and other times not.

To add to my confusion I have had an overhaul of the cooling system including a new radiator and now the radiator light is back on despite there being sufficient coolant!

On one occasion when it stalled after being unused for about a month I had a mechanic pull of the cover where the spark plug leads enter (the rotor compartment I guess) and it was very moist.

Is there a possibility of a leaking water seal that would dampen this part of the electrical system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been trying to fix this issue for a long time now. The car otherwise is in great condition.

Cheers.

I this is the fault I had, its very common on 260e's, and maybe others. Symptoms as you describe, car starts, runs ok for a few miles (UK) then either misfires, or falters, or, if as happened to me, I stopped at a local shop, car will possibly start, then falters and die, or it will not start at all. no amount of trying will get it going again. Leave it for 2 or 3 hours, car starts and runs fine. Assuming all the obvious is checked and ok, the problem is the ignition amplifier. They get hot, then break down. Leave them to cool, and all is ok, until then next time. On a UK car, the amplifier is mounted on the inner front wing behind the ignition coil, on the passenger side (remember UK car is right hand drive). Expensive new, try a breakers, make sure the part numbers are the same. Bob
