Help-98 C230 Pass outside mirror

A few days ago, I very lightly bumped into the passenger side outside mirror while walking by it in the garage. Evidently the hook or whatever that holds the mirror to some sort of spring has broken off. The piece dropped on the floor but now the mirror will just flop around. No other damage.

Does the entire mirror assembly have to be replaced or can just the mounting plate be replaced? I've thought about removing the mirror and seeing if someone can weld broken part back to the plate. There are four screws. Can the mirror be removed by taking these screws out, or will this require removal of the interior door panel?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Herb,

A relative of mine has the same problem, backed into the garage door with it. The mirror appears just fine, and the electrics work .. just that the mirror is no longer solidy connected to the door.

Did you ever get an answer to this post or figure out what to do.

Any help will be most appreciated ....
