Looking at a 1987 420 SEL advertised for 6500 tomorrow... What should I look for?

I always wanted to own a Mercedes SEL. Never owned one before.

I am going to look at a 1987 420 SEL with only 85 K miles. Very low miles; why? Never used or too many problems to be used...???

What are things I should look at? Any items which are prone to failure?

Also, is there a dependable Mercedes Mechanic in the Cincinnati Metro Area that anyone has used?

Thx

I suggest you use Carfax to verify the mileage... it is really low. If he has full service records, then that is the best. Still have it checked out by the MB mechanic... if you can't find any... there is always the dealer...

Check under the rubber gasket around the bottom of the rear window. Look for rust that's hidden under the gasket--it'll lift up with help from a pen point. Assuming an OH car, check very carefully for rust. I just sold a 1986

420 SEL in excellent condition (I was the original owner) with 137,000 miles for $3,200. Being a "rust belt" car, I think you may be paying too much.
