Q: what are weak/strong points in 560 SEC

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 560 SEC (late 80s) - do any of you happen to know what to look for when inspecting the car? Any particular strong points that should be OK where any repair or damage would become costly? Any known weak points where these cars tend to have problems?

Apart from the usual things (no more than 2 prev. owners, no accidents, catalysator, no "show off"-mods, low mileage < 160k km) - is there anything important to rule out certain offers just because they have a certain deficit?

TIA for any answer in German or English (or French or Swedish, if there is no other way...)

Get the car on a lift and check for leaks at head gaskets and rear maion crankshaft seal (oil); transmission front seals (ATF); road test for good ride (hydraulic suspension); check A/C, other accessories, and probe for rust under the rear windshield gasket at bottom and sides.

And one of the most important things.....find out when and if the timing chain and rails and associated parts have been replaced. These should be done every 100,000 miles or 10 years. The chains can stretch and jump a link or break....the other pieces just get brittle with age. And if that chain breaks you will be replacing valves, pistons, etc. a very expensive fix. Try to buy a car that has all the service paperwork. Regular oil changes are the key to keeping the MB engines running properly and keeping wear to a minimum. It is a simple thing but many owners just don't take the time or spend the money to do it, especially on used MBs.

Any late 80's 560 SEC is worth buying. There is a trove of info on the SEC forum and it's leader Dr. Satish Tumalla. pkmaven
