Someone backed into the front of your car gently, probably by mistake, causing no visible damage, but the ambient temperature sender behind the license plate was affected. Many owners relocate the new sender inside the engine compartment, behind the left headlight and splice the wire to the original one. P.

As the outside temperature display's primary purpose is to warn the driver of freezing/icy conditions on the roadway, try to keep the sensor out of the engine bay where it may erroneously read the warmer air.
