Speedo Incorrect

Hi all,

I've had a scan through some of the other threads on this topic, but just wanted to check anyway. Apologies if I'm being thick!

Just bought a 1990 Racing Green, which had a transplant in 1994 to a

1275 (which I think is still leaded, but that's another matter).

I've noticed that I seem to be going rather faster than the speedo says, and am assuming that the original speedo was left in the car when the engine was swapped.

Am I correct in thinking that if I stick a 1275 speedo in that I'd be pretty much back to normal? If so, does it matter what 1275 it came out of, eg. Clubby/Sprite/Cooper?

Tjanks in advance, Colin

Depending on the 1275 engine you've got the chances are it came out of a Metro. The speedo drive gears in the gearbox will be set to drive the Metro Speedo allowing for the Metro wheel size.

You've got two options really. One is to get the speedo recalibrated the other is to change the speedo drive gears in the gearbox.

Speedy Cables will recalibrate a speedo for about £40 I think. To change the speedo gears in the gearbox is an engine out job.

I've got the very same problem on my Mini, i'm taking out the engine, but have a problem on the gearbox that needs fixing anyway.

Hmmm... I seem to recall that I can take the drive gear out with ease (and not removing the engine). There is a bolt that hold on the speedo-drive assembly and it can be removed from below (though not the easiest place to get into).

That removes one of the two speedo drive gears. To get at the other one the engine mounting bracket on the gearbox has to come off to get to the panel that lets you pull the gear out.
