Hi People, I am modifying a 1275 MG metro engine, fitting a Scatter Cam, RC40 exhaust etc, Just bought a 1.3/4" inlet manifold, what would be a good SU carb to fit with this kind of mod, TIA Fitzy

erm, the MG metro HIF44 card you may already have? Thats assuming you want to use the 1 3/4 inlet you just bought? Get a K&N filter for it AND the bellmouth to help airflow.
Just get it rolling roaded to determine the best needle, jet and spring combo.
Chris
I agree with Chris. Not really any other choice if you want to get the best from the cam. You could always chop a DCOE 45 in half and use it like half a split 45 set up for maximum tunablilty (is that a word?), but you'd have to butcher the bulkhead to make room for it.... Paul
Don't fancy chopping away at the bulkhead, so that's out of the window, thanks Paul, (I don't have a carb yet Chris) I fancy the HIF44, as this should give me what I'm looking for "Torque" Thanks Fitzy
Fitzy I take it from your btopenworld email addy you are uk? Obviously the carb you're after will be sitting on a MG metro, what it will also be on is the Metro Van Den Plas. This is a MG metro in all but name and some more fancy trim - like a Ford Mundano Ghia. The VDP metro's also came in auto - while MG metro's didn't. Nice for people who want easy, quck mini auto's. I dont think you'll have a prob getting one of these carbs. Other cars do have them but the MG ones will probably actually get the car started and running without tinkering - at least you'll know your hard work does work! If you're going to get it tuned I can recommend Peter Baldwin (miglia champ), he's in Royston nr Cambridge I believe?
I do rember that when fitting the HIF44 some slight bodywork 'adjustment was necessary as the float chamber is close to the hole in the middle of the dash, think I used a plastic mallet to gently tap the panel a bit further away from the carb bottom. I suppose that does depend on exactly what inlet manifold you use though!
Let us know how you get on!
Chris
Thanks Chris,
This work and transplant is planned for June/July this year, I will let you know what the outcome is, yes, I am in UK, Liverpool, I will have a look on eBay, or at Bingley hall on 29th, The tuning specialist in my region is MiniSport, Padiham, I will book a rolling road session and report back to the group with the outcome, Thanks for all the input Fitzy
Well I've got a HIF44 fitted to my 90' Mainstream Cooper as standard, the RSP got the same and the carb fits fine on a water heated inlet manifold.
Taffy
Thanks Taff, I was wondering what else the HIF44 carb was fitted to,
Fitzy
Thats because the 1990 mini cooper was a mini with a MG metro lump and a
3.1FD and that's all - mechanically. Excellent little cars, shame they couldn't keep the 3.44 :-( I'll have a look at my local breakers at the weekend - they always seem to have mg metro's in there!?Chris
Brilliant, Thanks Chris Fitzy
Just to let you all know, I have the 1-3/4" mini sport water heated manifold, and I have recently acquired the HIF44 carb, I am now searching eBay for a Piper 270 scatter cam, or similar, I will let you know how things progress Fitzy
MED engineering in leicester will probably have a new one on the shelf if you have the readies. Unsure what the new price would be but can recommend them 100%.
