1993 Mitsubishi Mirage, strange sound

Ok, this is a 4 cyl, manual transmission. It has recently started making some kind of grinding noise, similar to a bad rotor, but intermitent. It only makes this noise while moving forward, under acceleration. If I push the clutch in a roll down a hill, the noise stops, the second I release the clutch and accelerate, the noise starts again. The noise gets faster and louder as speed increases.

I?ve had a couple ideas thrown at me as to the cause, inner cv axles, and a bad motor mount. I have a sneaky fear it is a bad transmission, and was hoping to get some opinions before I start throwing money at it.

Thanks for any help you may offer

A not uncommon problem that does this is the final drive (differential) bearings. Does it grind in reverse too? For a 93, its probably not worth fixing the trans (though its not difficult), just get a decent replacement from a wrecker. Yours is either an F5M21 (4G15 engine) or F5M22 (4G93 engine), and is the same as fitted to the 93-95 Eagle Summit coupe and Dodge Colt sedan.

Other possibilities are

- front wheel bearing(s)

- front or rear engine mount broken. Get a decent spare from a wrecker for maybe $20 each, or pay $100 or so for a new one.
