got a 2001 eclipse was driving when i tried to down shift i couldn?t get it to there is no smell of burning,i cut off motor put in first gear how i drove home just stopped working

First things to check are
- is the slave cyl (on the front side of the trans) leaking?
- is there any fluid in the master cylinder? See #1.
MIGHT be the master, but the slave is the most common failure.
