My cargo shelf is driving me NUTS! The plastic knobs that stick into the hatch and hold the strings that raise the cargo shelf keep slipping out or break off. Surely all gen 2 owners have had this problem, and I'd like to hear how you might have solved it.

Can you remove the plastic knob as you explained, and drill a hole and use a self tapping screw from underneath the cargo hatch ?? some cars over here in Australia like fords and commodores have had to use this idea to secure their boot hatch to the car as the soft wood fails, so by screwing a self tapping screw into a small hole in the hand knob it should work.
