Make (Mitsu)? Model? Engine? Year? Preventive maintenance performed?

Hint: Providing this essential info would help you get better answers/ideas. Since none is provided, I'll take a long shot and say clean the throttle body assembly.

Good luck.

That would be the 4G64 SOHC 16v would it not? "Rumbling" at idle and 40mph is a clue. If you are down on power, it could have skipped a tooth on the cam belt. If so, time for a new belt.

Did you have the cam belt replaced recently? Is there now a strong / loud vibration at about 3000 rpm (which is about 40mph)? If so, the belt was not put in correctly, and has the oil pump about 90 degrees out of phase.

We need more info to diagnose.
