Help!!! Need to know where pulse generator is.

Hi,

I am new to this but here it goes. I have a 1990 Mitsubishi Galant that runs ok. It has 134,000 miles on it. Recently the automatic transmission isn't shifting properly. It just stays in 3rd gear I believe. About two weeks ago, I was taking it to Mitsubishi to have them look at it, and all of the sudden at the red light, the car started shifting properly. I was happy, because I didn't have to take it in. The next day, I drove it, the car wouldn't shift again. I thought this was strange. I was thinking maybe the computer reset itself. I don't know. Anyway, took it to Mitsubishi, and they told me that the car needs a "pulse generator". This controls the shifting of the transmission computer. I asked the guy where is it, and he didn't know. I think he knew, but didn't want to tell me, because he wants to do the work himself and have me pay him. Anyway, does anyone know where it is on this car, or any other one? How hard is it to replace? Can I do the work myself. Is this part on the transmission? Can I get to the part from my transmission computer behind my radio, or do I have to jack up the car and get to it from the transmission, or under the hood.

Please help me find out where it is located, and if I need to access it by looking under the hood, under my car, or behind my radio where the transmission computer is. I think I might have seen it, but not sure. I figured I would just get it used from somewhere, and do it myself, or order it. I would like to save money, and not have to pay for labor if replacing it is easy.

Thanks,

Dave
