me again

also, the other day I was driving in a 55 mph zone ( i usually stay in the city) and when I attempted to shift to O/D the engine RACED! Like it dropped down a gear instead of up. The other gears work fine. The oil was low, and I've since added. I couldn't find the tranny dipstick ( I feel like such a girl!) but when I opened the resovoir there was fluid in there. It's a 97 Galant(automatic). Could anyone tell me if the oil level can effect the shifting, and where the heck is the dipstick for the tranny fluid???? also, about the last post...where is the fuse box in a 97 galant? ( I'm beginning to really dislike my car!!!) and only 75,000 miles!

Knowing which engine you have would be helpful?

Oil is in the engine, and doesn't effect the transmission, but it's level is important too. Fluid in a resevoir (brown or honey coloured), is usually brake fluid, or power steering fluid. If it's green, pink or blue, it's usually windshield washer fluid. Green can also be radiator fluid You are right to be looking for the transmission dip stick. I can't help you here as I'm not familiar with this car. However, it usually looks like the engine oil dipstick, is usually marked ("Trans" or "Transmission") and is some times a different colour (yellow or red maybe). If your going to add fluid, DON"T get them mixed up.

Hi, The transmission dipstick should be in front of the engine, deep down. Looking down from the front side, the dipstick will be a little to your left. This is the only other thing that has similar hook like engine oil dipstick. It is not that long though. The fuse box should be near battery and the air filter box. It has a lot of writing on top. Let me know if you found those.

thanks for the replies. I looked for the fusebox & found it easily after I posted. ( Feel so syupid) lol. I'll have to search for tranny dipstick. On some posts, other sites, ppl say the galant doesn't have a tranny fluid dipstick (???) WhenI originally attempted to find it, I looked where I thought it would be, and didn't see one. But with the engine running , I didn't stick my face right in there either! To Nirodac, thanks for your reply. I'm not THAT much of a girl, however!! I know the difference between my washer fluid and my tranny ! LOL

bought the car at auction a few years back ( LOVE the auction) and it didn't have one in the glove box. I asked about getting one from the dealer, but didn't want to spend the $20 something to get it. I honestly didn't know how long I'd have the car. Thanks for your help, though. :-)
