Also, I've seen that some ECMs (Dimante) suffer from faild capacitors. Any chance that this might also be the cause of my ECM's failure?

Not always that easy to see either, sometimes they just seep out around the connections and the electrolyte can slowly erode tracks on the pcb away...
I'd recommend replacing them anyway in anything over 8 or so years old...
leaking on to the board there are several rebuilder out some good some not so good check for ref's ask questions and choose wisey
