4 pot types

Yes.

Well, I do work 50 miles from home - 20 miles of which I pay myself.

Still, I suppose it's not bad, as, on balance, I break even on the cost of fuel. Running costs are close to nothing, as all my commuting hack gets is a £15 oil change every 8-10k miles and tyres / brakes when it needs them.

I wish I was that close. I spend close on 3 hours in the car a day :-(

I think you're doing pretty well to get them to pay for any of it yesno?

Urgh, what an incredible waste of time.

Even if the drive was entertaining I don't think I'd enjoy it every day.

Well then what the hell are you even comparing the two for ?!?!?!?

The entire point of modern Diesel engines in modern cars, is their higher economy !

Why else do you think people pay the extra couple of grand for the Diesel version of ? It's certainly not for the nice noise, and longer service intervals !!!!

Yes, that's cos you can't drive. We've had this discussion lots of times :)

Precisely.

I repeat :

"You appear to be missing the point here. The number of straight-six engines that can make over 160bhp and return well over 40mpg, even when cold, is zero"

Seconded !

Get a new job or move house - you're wasting your life, sat in your car !

A friend of mine recently had to start making a 75 minute commute - flooded offices, means they're working from a disaster recovery centre for now.

Even though they're paying him thirty-something pence a mile to make the 120 miles per day, and have been doing for the past year (which all adds up to LOTS of cash) he's on the verge of leaving...

I repeat : limited rev range, piss poor power to weight ratio, rattly noise, wheezing turbo, frequent oil changes and expensive services you mean? I cant see much advantage to any of that.

I reckon an old Audi 80 1.9TDI might be for Doki. They're supposed to average best part of 50mpg generally, so 40mpg with doki driving it should be manageable.

It's not that bad - remember it's a leased car. If I ran my own car I would get 40p a mile plus afixed lump sum every month.

Er, what ?

You can't see much advantage to any of that because there IS no advantage to any of that !

People buy Diesels because they're economical, not because they sound nice and have an extra-wide rev range !!!!

He just needs a real car :)

I suspect the reason his Ka and Volvo are so uneconomical, is because he drives everywhere with his foot to the floor.

In something that isn't underpowered, you can't actually do that - if I floor it in the TI for more than a few seconds, I'm soon at 100mph plus - and on a lumpy country lane, you're forced to stop accelerating if you want to stay on the road...

You just need bigger balls :).

In article , snipped-for-privacy@spamtroNspidar.com spouted forth into uk.rec.cars.modifications...

Thought you were talking brakes for a second there, what with all the moans you had about the Ka not stopping in the same week as you wanted it to.
