Can of petrol and a box of matches - it must be a right shed if they've swapped it your Cavalier.

Failing that, junk the T16 and fit the silky 2.3 Honda lump - fast, reliable, and not that bad on fuel when you're 'avin it large... or if you're feeling really brave, I've yet to see one powered by the 2.2 DOHC VTEC lump out of a Prelude - it'll definitely fit, as the 2.3 and 2.2 are very similar.

Oh, and change your brakes... I could do with some 600Ti calipers for my coupe and GTi.

The 2.3 from the 623gsi? The one that makes crap all power and is worse on fuel than the T16? Why in god's name would anyone ever do that?!

It makes 170bhp, and it's silky smooth - they go alright as it happens, and in old age aren't shagged out like T16s invariably are.

And when you're having large, they're better on fuel - they're not even that much worse when you're not.

Do them asap, not only for peace of mind but to get the use out of it.

Boost valve - easiest ~20 bhp youll find (unless you melt the pistons of course), all the rest is going to cost incrementally higher and higher the more you search for power.

It goes 'alright', yes. It goes 'quickly', no.

Only in your wildest wettest dreams.

It goes 'bang', no. It does sub 20mpg when caned round town, no. I believe you can retro fit the 2.2 VTEC head as well...

Those dreams are the best. ;-)

Not in the opinion of most owners. One particular component in the gearboxes does, the engines don't.

The only thing that gets tired is the actuator spring. Wind it up two or three notches and it's as good as new.

What a complete load of bollocks. The 623 only had just over 150bhp, it couldn't pull the skin off of a rice pudding.

Clearly.

I sometimes wonder why I bother sticking with real life when fantasy sounds so much better...

Dunno. Blokey on austin-rover.co.uk picked up a "not shagged" one for £380. Old cars=worthless.

ITYM most people's opinion of Rover on here

More like it. What it does mean is that if you get the Honda powered versions, you get a quite decent car for bugger all money.

K power is fine if looked after and you've got a good knowledgable independant garage nearby.

Breakdown cover is essential for the whole range.

Not my experience, I'm afraid.

Neglect certain things on the K series models, and yes, you and your local recovery place will soon become on first name terms.

The Honda lumped cars of the 80s and 90s, or at least those sub 800 sized, are very well engineered and reliable overall, not least when you consider they were in direct competition with s**te like the CVH engined Escort.

Ah, goalpost moving, I like it :)

Especially if it's gutless models like the 623...

So probably about 125mph actual, is that what goes for impressive these days ?

And I'd agree with you wholeheartedly, but that's a completely different subject.

You will do, as I said - performance models wear out faster than lower powered models.

No it isn't, but whichever way you want to look at it the TI will wipe out a 623.

Say it as loud as you want, it's still rubbish.

Been there, done it. It's quicker by a considerable margin.

I've seen off many 623s since I started driving TIs in 2000, two of them above 100k, two of them below 70k. Not one 623 has even come close.

Not really going to anything you have to say on this, so it's pointless going around in circles...
