The running in thing, when I got the 206 the guy said it didn't need running in, but it did have a free 500 miles service which was just an oil change. If you're definately getting rid after three years, it won't affect you how it's run in, just depends how kind you're feeling to the driver who gets it in 10 years with 150k miles on it heh. There is that many different ways of running it in, and that many opinions as to what's the best way that however you drive it, you'll be using someones method. Some say, get it good and warm, then just thrash the s*it out of it, others stay stay under 3krpm for

500 miles, some say just drive it normally and it'll get a nice assortment of different loads and revs - I'd go with that to be fair, just driving it normally, being a bit more careful when it was cold that usual. Then if after 500/1000 miles if you want to do an oil change for your peace of mind, go for it - won't cost much and won't hurt :-).

If you plan on keeping it forever, maybe run it in a bit, but to be fair, loads of 3 year old cars on the market are ex-fleet or ex-rental. Probably less than like, 4 of them were run in at all. The rest probably many times been driven hard from cold, and turbo's have never been allowed to cool before parking up, or allowed to get warm before going to full boost. So really, with modern materials and oils etc - it doesn't really seem to matter. Ok, maybe now instead of getting to 300k, the engine might only be good for 250k - but the car, especially one as low priced when new as the C1 is gonna end up scrapped before that because, like many cars right now, is worth very little at 250k and 15 years old, so a service and some new tyres probably cost more than it's worth. It's a shame but loads of surprisingly good cars, with plenty of life left in them are scrapped because they're worth so little, that a few small faults can often cost more than the car's worth.

Yea my 197 felt much better for 13k miles, than the 1.5k demo I tried (well I tried a few actually, all very low miler. Mine felt smoother, definately better than the demos, especially when cold, and it also seemed to rev more freely (it was totally standard) as well which made it feel a little quicker. It must have been pretty noticeable as when I was test driving it before I bought it, I gave it some of a roundabout and remember thinking it felt perkier than the previous demo. This was with me, mum [1]and a salesman in the car and the other cars I tried were just me an the salesman in, aside for another one where mum came along. Those were my un-scientific tests, and all in un-controlled conditons.

Obviously, I didn't put it on the rollers once a month, or make logs of economy, or have the oil analysed all because like, woah. I unfortunately also didn't get every fluid in the car analysed by Shell's lab either, and I'm afraid I don't have an airplane. I do have a hot air balloon though, but unfortunately it doesn't have an engine. It just needs to be full of hot air....[2]

I guess you need to get a litre drum, and fill it with chips - see how many portions it needs @ £1 a piece then you'll know how much a litre of them is worth. I guess there would have to be an agreed number of how many chips there are in a portion - perhaps the average of 100 portions of chips from

The fact that it was free and we had the rollers running for a friend. There is a rolling road (Bosch) in our workshop, courtesy of a former life earning our bread tuning cars for track and race.

Altough we're not into that market anymore, there are still things, incentensifs en yep: work where we get contratcted for. It's now more like a hobby.

Both: oil is changed on new vehicles after 1000 km, then 5000km , then

10000 km. Once 10000 km the intervals become 10.000 km.

On the personal cars the interval is 5000 km or 1 year whatever comes first.

The particular car was bought as an investment, spent 23 years in an aerconditioned garage and was never driven (740 km on the clock).It still had *all* original fluids. It seems that bankers don't always make the smartest investments nor protect them adequatly, then and now.

Our customer still bought it for 350.000 EUr. The car went straight back to the factory and reconditionning was billed over 140.000 EUr. It lives now in the south of France and gets driven around 2000 km a year.

Easy answer : our "cheap" cars are invoiced per trip (5-20 km citydriving) 62 Eur + VAT (that's when only one service technician is aboard); they all perform 3-5 jobs a day. There are little vans (Berlingo and VW Caddy), there are also Subaru Legacy's (one of which is the 3.0R) and a single BMW 320d break.

As to my personal cars: they might be cheap in your eyes but the five of them have a total horsepower over 2000 HP. In fact so cheap that their combined actual value is around twice the price of your house... if you own a house that is (I do and mine are paid for)

If you buy oil at 12 UKP per litre, then you are royally screwed over. But you being you, that seems hardly surprising, is it? I won't have to repeat my offer delivering 60l drums of any kind/make of oil wanted at the price of 10 UKP/l?

Even Porsche Brussels doesn't dare to invoice to invoice more than 10.5 Eur per liter and the last thing I suspect them of is using poor quality products.

And last I saw UKP was not quite at parity with the Eur, however if UK decisions are made by people claiming to pay 12 UKP/l Sterling will continu to drop.

Time rather than distance oil changes on low mileage cars is part of the service proceeder with most.

As I said, poorly serviced. All the service instructions I've seen make provision for this sort of thing by specifying time rather than distance changes. Especially with coolant and brake fluid which deteriorate

What you've done so far is give details of poor servicing - not any evidence that 'bettering' the maker's spec has any benefit. And I'm *not* saying to ignore maker's specs. Quite the reverse. They do tend to know as much about their product as anyone...

I was meaning that if you can buy the oil and filter in the UK for 15-20 quid they must use very cheap oil or have very small sumps. Even my old car which takes a basic oil costs over 30 quid for good oil and filter. My 'new' car about twice that - due to using a high spec oil.

Why would I want a 60 litre drum of oil?

I'm in the UK. I'll bet Porsche UK charge rather more...

Now back to the point. Please provide unrefutable evidence that changing oil early provides real benefits in engine life, etc. To do so would mean controlled tests involving new identical vehicles and oils over a vast mileage. And very very few people buy new cars and run them for this sort of time. High mileage business users tend to change their vehicles long before any 'advantage' would be seen. After all, why would they want to keep a vehicle for more than 3 years or so?

As to the UKP: apparently the UK is begging now to enter the Euro. The times when Pound Sterling was a world-currency seem to be over. You might consider why that is the case.

Do you own a company with high mileage users? No, you don't. I do however. Extreme high milage is 50.000 km / year (30.000 miles/year). Most professional users are in the 30-40 kkm-bracket per year.

Secondly -and this is Belgian law, I don't know UK law concerning- : here a new car can be fiscally deducted in 5 years.

As to the 3-year-lease-formulae, aimed at the proverbial traveling sales-man, we've done the math. There is a major financial gain in having a car 5 years rather than 3 years. Actual car quality allows a car easily to go 180-250.000 km in a 5 years period.

This is confirmed -since thinckering electric odo-meters is out of range for the backdoor garage-mechanics- by the mileage of second hand cars / ex-lease-cars.

'll be hard pressed to find a car having done more than 50 kkm/year. To add injury to insult and also backed up by math: leasing is 10-20% more expensif than buying, the benifits of an easier comptability don't weigh up against the extra cost.

Finally: if a company has persons in its service who need to travel

50.000 km/year by car (that's 625 Hr@ 80kph on the working year of 220 days) for business purposes, than that shows a terrible organisation.

It implies that that more than a quarter of the worktime of that person is spent behind a steering wheel. If the person does that kind of mileage outside working hours (to commute) it shows a dismal valuation of his own time.

The above of course for non-transport/courrier companies: what kind of mileage they perform as well when they replace a vehicle, is known but not one courrier service replaces its vans on a three year basis.

Indeed. I bought my Spriner (314, 2.3 petrol/LPG) with 149k on the clock, with full service history (printout from leasing company), which the dealer couldn't find at the time I bought it. I made sure they marked on the receipt that it was to follow, and it duly arrived in the post. It had had

4 services in its life. My view is that the engine sounded absolutely sound when I went to buy it, and on test-driving it, it ran spot on. I confirmed with a Merc dealer that it's got the Assyst (sp?) system, which monitors oil quality, and I should be fine to trust what that says in terms of when it wants a service. Presumably with it having done 149k in 2.5 years it had done a fair bit of motorway mileage, and the oil genuinely didn't degrade that much in the 35-40k between changes (most recent service then was 140k or so). After all, Sulphur is well known to be one of the main contaminants of oil, and there's bugger all Sulphur in LPG, so I can well believe it. So far it's on 185k and still running spot on. I intend to keep it until at least 250k, and will report back to our Belgian expert here on how well it's running, which no doubt will be rubbished, but as far as I'm concerned, if it still reliably starts and stops, tops out at the same speed as it used to, uses the same amount of fuel as it used to, then they're all reliable enough indicators to me that things are as they should be. And that's without taking samples from every orifice and sending them off to Mars for analysis.

Coming from a Belgian, the nation that has only ever exported beer and chocolate, that's rather amusing.
