Nah they're quite happy with speeding *compared* to not paying the fine...
Charlies comes from a town an hour north of Bakersfield just off 99. I now hold you responsible for the noticeable police patrols up and down this whole long boring stretch... ;-)
Its those "towns" that cause the problem. They have fat cops sat in the bar with stop watches, backed up by helicopters measuring how quickly you go from one painted mark on the road to the next. They had been watching me for two days before the helicopter/road block incident...
Where is their sense of humour?

California Highway Patrol are, generally, meaner than a mean thing.
Yes. If you've not done something too stupid they relax a little.
Park Rangers are equally mean. I have a superb picture taken moments before Miss Meany Park Ranger produced the biggest gun in the world* that is kicking about our drive somewhere...
*at the time it felt this way! :o)
All the park rangers I met were great. (Utah, Colorado, etc).
