Opinion Time Alfa 155

Thanks Tom

That's the kind of thing I was looking for, my last "Loved Car" was a Citroen BX16v, so I'm used to irritating faults, I can't afford anything over a couple of grand and don't want finance at the moment. I really like the 75, but all the ones I've seen for sale have been too cheap for me to trust they aren't bangers.

I wouldn't worry about 75s, they're currently very cheap as they haven't really hit 'classic' status, just 'wierd old Alfa' at the moment.

Mechanically quite simple - the TSpark engine is unburstable save for the camchains which may or may not need doing at 130-180k miles - all depends on the quality of oil used / frequency of changes / previous owners getting the chain tensioned when it gets rattly.

Things to watch for are badly crunching synchro rings (expect 2nd and

3rd to be a bit dodgy) and a diff. bearing whine.

Rust is limited usually to the rear arches and underneath the rear lights - even then it's not terminal. Anything very rusty on top will b shot to shit underneath. Generally they don't really rot, though.

Obviously check all the electrical bits work, although, IME 75s being simple beasts don't exhibit the faults you sometimes get on later cars.

£500 will buy a rough looking but usable car, £1k a nice one, £2k will buy something more or less as new.

All taken on board, I'll let you all know if I make any decisions.
