Painting (metal flake)

Jun 26, 2004 7 Replies

Okay first post, need some help with painting, I'm thinking about putting a black metal flake finish on my BMW 318i E36 project car.

Now from what I've gathered via googleing, you need a clear lacquer to mix with the metal flakes and an activator to make it set, over some sort of base coat.

Ok this is where I need some advice:

How much do I need to cover the entire car? Atm I have 7.5 litres of GTI two pack clear including the activator but I'm guessing ill need twice that amount?

Can this stuff be hand painted? For the places that a spray gun would be impractical.

Do I need a special spray gun to use metal flake?

How hard is this stuff to apply? I would love to do it myself but there doesn't seem to be much point if its all going to have to be sand papered off : /

How much would a paint job like this add to my insurance? If anyone knows and decent insurers for modified cars gimme a shout (Also any links to companies that do online quoteing would be good too), since although im mainly going for cosmetics atm, for my project I hope to get another lump transplanted from a suitable donor.

If you can help great, and if you have any other hints and tips that would help or if there are any other newsgroups that are more relevant plz say!

Cheers for any advice or tips!

I've got a metalflake respray :)

Nice! I'm really struggling to decide which car to paint atm, I have a Mrk2 Golf 8v GTi which I really love but the golf has been modded to death! I'm leaning toward the bling becuase I have only ever seen two very nicely modded BMW's one in Redline which was Renton's cossie powered E36 beemer and a turbo'ed E46 in Fast Car, both quite a while ago.

But Its also a struggle to find any decent kits for them, ZeeMax are quality but stupidly expensive and not all too distinctive. And the Golf mrk 2 has a massive range of attractive aftermarket gear.

I think there's a subtle joke in there somewhere.
