the gearbox

dont get me wrong its a hoot to drive for a 1200cc car with a piddly 85 brake pedals are spot on for a bit of heal and toe its revvy and just fun to throw around for a while problem is 80 in 5th is nearly 4500rpm a ton is nearly 6k revs FFS

revvy little italian rot box :)

any ways back on track my question

will a mk2 sporting 6 speed box bolt onto the side of the wifes mk1 99 sportings engine and are the mountings/shafts etc the same fitments

any thoughts guys

No no, they can be persuaded to be quite economical. High engine speeds isn't an issue, but how it's driven, heh that is...

I'm pretty sure you can't do this, but there was a short lived 6 speed MkI - ISTR it was badged as an 'EL'.

Although, it didn't give an 'overdrive' top gear, just a closer stacked box.

Not worth it, it's a small revvy engine, and is geared as such.

No, totally wrong.

ELX cabrio was more or less tin-top Sporting spec.

You'd need the very, very rare 'EL' gearbox. It was, ISTR, based on the S spec with some 'sporty' interior trim and a 6-speed box designed to appeal to the 'yoof'.

It's the same engine, so it might, but the mounts are likely to be different.

As I recall it was claimed to be based on the SX, at least on price. Fiat dropped the electric windows and central locking and gave it fog lamps and a spoiler, oh and that six speed box.

It was a better gearbox to use than the five speeds, but that wasn't especially difficult, heh.

The SX came with FFL as standard (at least the mid model revisions did) can't comment about the older 55/60SX's but my 75 SX had FFL as did the 85 16v SX)

Not the very early ones. The EL was only out for around a year or so, and when it was dropped Fiat added Muppet Aware Lights to SX models. :p
