I'm going to buy one in the summer. Well, I think so. Can't decide whether to get a Chimera and put up it's faults, but have the V8 and be able to terrify myself on a daily basis, or whether to spend similar money on a Boxster, go not quite so fast but be safe in the knowledge it won't break quite so often..

If you don't care about the image and actually have to use the car, Boxster all the way.

I've had two Capri 2.8is and two MX-5 hairdressers cars already among a load of other tat, so the image doesn't bother me at all. I always wanted a TVR since driving my stepdad's, but as you rightly say, I'll actually have to use the car as transport, not a toy. The sensible thing then would be to buy the coxster, and wait a few years until everything's settled down and buy a TVR to keep in the garage that I can use when i want, not when I have too//

I've wanted a TVR for about 10 years now, so finally time to buy one now the house is bought, wedding is paid off, work is going well etc. I wanted the V8 and I want to be terrified so I've gone for the Chim. Only the baby 4 litre, but that's enough for now, and it keeps the price down to a sensible level. Still 240bhp and just over a tonne though so no slouch (although I don't believe the sub 5s 0-60 you see banded about all over the place).

I've offered the bloke the cash for the car I saw tonight, so just waiting to see if he agrees (he's already had one other offer at the weekend - should have got my arse in gear last week!!). I'll find out in the next couple of days! Luckily there seems to be quite a few about so even if I lose out I should be able to find another one in the spec I want without too much hassle.

Strangely enough he's selling the Chim to go and buy a Porsche (a Boxster or some other one that I cant remember, dont do Porsches!).

Not even. A new freeway extension has seen travel times to Bunbury drop to under 2 hours. 4 if you buy another VW van. : )

Not really. If you can keep it there for a year before you move you can bring it with you no bother at all. If you buy a newish M3 you could make as much as Aus$30k with the move.

Roughly what are the costs of bringing a car over to Oz? My bro's got a 5 year old 80k-miler S4 that he's had for a couple of years and is now flogging, and he seems to reckon the costs of getting it out there would outweigh any benefit. It might be relevant that he's got dual nationality.

Don't quote me but rough figures from years ago was about Aus$5k by sea once you pay all the duties, taxes etc. We have a 50% luxury car tax here which means for anything over Aus$60k or so we really get hammered. A top spec Merc here costs nearly double what it does there. So for high end relatively new stuff there is a shitload of money to be made. There is restrictions on how long you have to own it in the uk and how long you have to own it here before you flog it so it isn't really something you can do as a business. But for a one off trip over here to live you would be mad not to bring something with you if you have the spare cash. Go to

They are imported under a different scheme. The upshot of it is they can't import a model that is locally delivered. So you can't jap import a WRX because they sold them here locally unless it is something like a 22B. I think the scheme is called SEVS.
