Wonder if it's possible....

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Dave Plowman (News), managed to produce the following words of wisdom

Did you buy a 4HP? I still need one...

The usual approach then is,

1) Empty the casing. 2) Bandsaw off the bellhousing 3) drill the new bolt pattern or weld on the new one.

It's a Rover V8, there's *bound* to be a bellhousing!

Might be the case with manuals, but not with autos - unless the two are interchangeable. The only late auto used with the V-8 is the 4 speed ZF. And that only really in Range Rover etc apps - see my earlier post about the problems in using that. The Sherpa riot van and some ambulances used the same box in a RWD application, but I don't know if the bellhousing was the same as the RR one. I've tried to find a Sherpa box without success.

Were there any V8 LDV sherpa shaped vehicles? Might be a chance to find a vaguely newer box. Or were they all manuals?

Yes, IIRC. But the one I recall was a special for the Police to use as riot interdiction vehicles...

As far as I know the LDV installation in ambulances etc was the same as the earlier Sherpa one. The 4HP 22 had a very long production life - it might still be made.
