94 GT starting prob

I have a 94 stang that has an odd problem that the dealer can't work out. Basically, what happens is after I drive for a bit and turn it off, when I go to turn it back on (if it's within 15 min or so) it won't start, and if it does, it idles really hard around 500RPM then dies. It does turn over when trying to start it. All I have to do to get it to go again is to let it sit there for a little bit (usually 30 min or 10 min if I open the hood). I know it sounds weird, but that is what happens. It has been taken in and have spent around 3k replacing map sensors, etc, but it still does the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Right off the top of my head I'd be looking at the fuel pressure. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Does the car have spark when it cranks? StuK

Funny you mention the fuel filter. I was thinking that same thing, but they told me they changed it when they did everything, but perhaps they didn't or I was mistaken, so I bought one and I am just waiting to find time to change it. It seems like it is getting spark because it will actually start sometimes when it is having difficulties and it sounds like it is choking because of lack of fuel or whatever, then it sputters and dies...does that help?

Sounds like there's a real good chance that something electronic might be going south during the hot soak.... TFI4 modules can be prone to this though my experience shows that when the modules die, they are usually dead - dead - dead. I can't recall on yours (manuals - aka laptop - are at work) but the module will either be mounted on the side of the distributor or on the fenderwell on a heatsink. If this hasn't been changed you can try using some component cooler (available at Radio Shack and other electronics supply outlets) to cool the ignition module the next time it occurs.

Even though I feel this is the likeliest suspect (unless of course it has already been replaced) you could purchase an inexpensive spark tester and this may help narrow the problem down to fuel or spark.....

I might also add that I'm assuming that harnesses and connectors have been closely inspected for problems and that all the grounds have been checked and found clean and tight. These kinds of problems can be frustrating at times and it is important to be sure of the basics.

Good Luck.

Well it seems to me someone needs to pull some codes to see what it might be recording. Shotgunning parts doesn't seem to be working! StuK

Maybe vaporlock? Try unscrewing the gas cap. Probably not it, but hell, I tried! :)

If anyone is interested, it turned out to be a wiring harness, one that was discontinued by Ford in 2000. The mechanic we took it to found one from a junk yard in VA.

Thanks for everyone's help!
