Pertronix Ignition

I have just had a Pertronix ignition installed in my 200 CID 1966 Coupe. Was this a worthwhile investment even if only never having to deal with points? Or was it just a waste of money?

You tell us! Did you get the matching coil? I put one on my brothers '64 Merc and it made a significant difference when starting the car. My brother is just young enough not to know points if they hit him in the head! To me it is a worthwhile mod. StuK

We got a Pertronix for the family Chris-Craft when my dad got tired of replacing points (and the distributor is on the wrong end of the engine... Go figure!). :)

So far, it's been great, well worth it. We noticed an immediate improvement in the idle.

Plus, if the Pertronix ever dies, it would be easy to drop a spare set of points back in, and limp back home.

Good choice! I've put Petronix in '66 w/ 200cu, 68 F100 w/360cu, 71 LTD w/400cu, all work great. Improved starting tremdously! Also, to improve the 200 performance, make sure the little spring clip on top of distributor shaft, where you put the rotor is not damaged or weak. I saw an article somewhere that recommended putting a very thin shim under that spring, on flat side of shaft, to take up any slack, or just to make it tighter, even if the spring is in good shape. If that rotor wiggles any, in relation to the distributor shaft , it's throwing off the timing all the time. That shim w/ the Pertronix made that little 200 purr like a kitten. My 2 cents: I've owned my 70 Boss 302 since 1987 and the engine is THE MOST ill tempered engine if it isn't constantly tuned properly and it is driven very little so that is a constant. Way back I removed the factory dual point (and kept it, of course!) and switched to a duraspark distributor (trigger) and MSD AL6 box. Well it worked OK and was consistant but a little far from factory apperance. Finally Pertronix released the Ignitor for dual point conversions. I bought their coil (painted it black as it was red or shiny or whatever back then) for a more "original" appearance. I reinstalled my orig Boss dual point w/ ignitor and it looks correct less the extra Ignitor wire. NOW! the Boss 302 fires right up upon cranking, needs no maintenance to the ignition and seems to runs much smoother upon accel. My take:: You have made a wise choice that you'll not regret!! I'll never go back to points!! J Burke
