Is there a single most likely cause for the A/C clutch not to engage? Car was parked over the winter and I just noticed this the other day.

There is a pressure switch on the system. Low pressure will prevent the clutch from engaging. Think leak and no mo' freon

I burned up two of those clamp-type clutches in my 1993 Mustang. I don't know if using the car for aggressive driving and clutch engagement works to well, the rubber-plastic thing wears out. Then, they make you replace the whole compressor.

You can easily replace the clutch without replacing the whole compressor. MUCH cheaper and easier too!
RE: the 94... First thing to check, as mentioned is whether the low-pressure switch is preventing it from engaging. Other than that there are a bunch of different things that can cause it!. I recently had to replace the relay box on mine due to a non-working compressor.
