Any one running EFI on a 393 or other large cid?

I know a carb and Victor Jr. would be a better choice for all out performance, but does anyone run EFI with large cubes? If so what heads and efi intake are you using and how are they performing?. I'm thinking about Edelbrocks Victor 5.8 manifold and Victor Jr. heads myself.

IMO, you're going to be down on HP if you use anything other than the spyder type intake (vic jr/supervictor intake with injector bosses). the Victor5.8 intake is well suited for mild

351w's but when you're talking almost 400ci it is going to be a considerable restriction - even with a mild setup. You may spend a bit more for the spyder intake, but it would be well worth it. Gary Rohe / Tony Bischoff call fuel injection "fuel infection" on large CI SBFs. Unless its done right, you're wasting money and HP.

I know on my 408w, even the plenum of the victor jr carb intake is too small. I picked up 22hp just by adding a 3" spacer (to increase plenum size). 22hp... it sounds impossible for a carb spacer to be worth that much HP, but obviously the plenum size is wayyyy to small for that much ci.

my street driven/pump gas 10.5:1 408w with: box stock vic jr heads (absolutely NO port work) vic jr intake (and 3" spacer) port matched to the heads

950cfm carb (Size recommended by Barry Grant) mild street grind solid roller cam (0.601 i/e is mild with that much CI - has plenty of vacuum at idle)

Made 608hp@6000rpm and 580ft/lb@4800rpm. From

3000rpm where we started the dyno pull through 6700rpm the motor put down over 500ft/lb. Whats wrong with a carb? ;-)

To much of PITA to switch. I'd have to start over the tranny as well since its an AODE. I'm also not looking for a really radical setup. Looking something around the Ford crate 392 power wise (430hp) no more than 500 hp.

500 hp seems to be the point where parts really start getting spendy. The only real reason I'm probably going to go with a 393 is I need crank rods, and pistons anyway so the 393 is really no more expensive. I'm really looking for low end torque since my car with me in it is 3800 pounds.. I'd like to run a 3.27-3.55 gear so the car can still be a cruiser. I also want to be able to kick on the ac and not worry about over heating either.

The Ford 392 uses the x303 head which seems small to me at only 176cc runner, I was thinking in the 195-210 range would be better. I all ready have a cam real close to the Ford crate motor (see below), but the crate motor was dynoed with a 750 holley on a Victor Jr. I do understand what your saying about plenum size and that is why I liked the idea of the 5.8 victor. With the removable end someone go make a spacer and add plenum area pretty easy. Of course on the victor jr EFI setup you can just add a carb spacer, but I'm some what limited on head room with an sn 95 and 3.5" cowl hood. I could go with the drop mounts, but I've had solid mounts in the past and rather not do it again.

Ford 392 cam dur @ 0.050 232/240 with 0.566/570 lift My cam duration @ 0.050 230/240 with 0.570/0.585 lift on 110 lca and 2 deg advance ground in.

Thanks for you input. What's your opinion on the 5.8 Victor now that you know where I'm looking? 600hp would be nice once a year when I go to the strip, but I need reliability and good street manners every day.
