Cruise control not working and if you pull the cable back and forth you can hear something clunk at the far end.
Any ideas

Have someone pull the cable while you look for the clunk?
Not sure of the year car since you didn't state it, but had a similar failure in my 88. The plastic piece in the vacuum actuator itself, where the cable linkage attaches to the diaphragm broke. Unless you are real good at jackleg repairs you have to replace the actuator module. Conveniently located between the inner fenderwell and the firewall on the drivers side.
