Kenne bell SC - boost only at WOT?

Nice. Body looks pretty straight. That garage is pretty nice, too.

Looks like your friend does pretty good work. The original was pretty nasty.

You guys do wonders. Night and day.

Looks great! Did the 455 just slip right in or did you have to "do stuff" to make it fit? I assume the tranny will line right up too? Same driveshaft?

Real nice, Steve. I hope you guys get it done before the winter. Looking forward to some timeslips.. ;)

I'm sure it will run a pretty decent time. Having 455 cubic inches of displacement tends to make that happen :) Good to see someone making progress on their ride. Did you do anything to the short block like honing etc.?

Of course is it. You still want linear throttle response; it doesn't make sense to engage the blower at partial throttle because that would be just like opening the throttle more - just what you don't want.

You want the blower to engage as you reach maximum engine load, which means low vacuum, and that's what it does.

I don't have a KB system, or even a Ford any longer, but I have a JR system on my Hiroshima Ford, which also bypasses the blower at partial throttle.

Cheers, Dana

Yeah, the body is in good shape other than the passenger side front fender. It has some rot through. The rear window looks like an attempt was made to seal it with every bottle of silicone in a 5 mile radius - I'm sure it leaks still too.

The garage is pretty nice. It's 550sf without any poles in the middle. It's very cold during the winter though.

Yeah he does! That was a "quick job" too. There is a core support kit for $100 bucks that I wish I had. It would have made his job easier - no bending of metal necessary. The body wasn't even attached at that mount before. There's also a front fender support bar that was just hanging too.

That's my second POR15 job I've done on a trunk. It wasn't completely thorough, but this isn't a show car. The key is to spray the spatter paint while the POR15 is still tacky. Otherwise it'll just wash right off. It won't adhere to POR15 that is dry, unless it's scuffed really well.

I had to change the frame mounts over. I'm still using a TH350 trans, so it all bolted right up. Actually the trans and motor went in mated together. Of course it's the same driveshaft. If I go to a TH400, then I'll need a shorter driveshaft. The trans mount crossmember also needs to be moved back a little, but the holes are all there for that. The brackets from the 350 swapped right over to the 455. It also uses the big hose coming from the gas tank even though the car was a 2bbl carb. The fuel line from the pump is also 3/8" from the 350. It needed a couple of tweaks to fit, but didn't take much. The fan shroud for the 350 won't work either. My friend has a

455 shroud that he mounted to get it running. Last week I found one for $20 at a small-time wrecking yard. Normally one in its condition would probably go for $150 or more. A #'s shroud just went for over $450 on ebay. Too bad he didn't have a doze of them! The linkage to the carb didn't swap either. That's partially due to the highrise intake and a 1" spacer to put his Qjet onto the Holley only flange. I'll probably space my Holley up once it's ready to go on there.

I just got off the phone with him, and his truck's timing chain went south while in MO. He just got it fixed (460) and is on the road again. We won't be working on it until Wednesday now. I hope it's ready for the track too!

Nope, nothing to the short block. I only disassembled the heads, timing cover, and oil pan. Everything else stayed. We were hoping to have it ready for last weekend's BOP race, but just didn't quite make it.

GEARS? You compare gears to a supercharger?

As far as boost only at full throttle, since I only bought the 6 psi KB blower, I stopped flooring it from a stop, because the car just sits there burning up the tires.

Oh, and I haven't plugged my KB site in ages, so

I remember that stuff from years ago back up in NJ. Swapped the engine/transaxle in my Corvair in my garage in February. Must've been all of 15 degrees.

It's even more impressive that he did it "impromptu". Nice work.

Good tip. Even though it wasn't show car as you say, it still looked pretty good.

Still no welding/cutting to have to contend with. Good deal.

That's what I thought. Any timetable for the TH400?

Nice. Don't ya just love it when everything's already laid out for you?

That's interesting. Wonder if GM did that as a cost-saving thing..

Ah, the details you find out. How about the radiator? Will it have enough cooling capacity for the 455?

More of those details!

Too bad about his truck. The 455 should be kick-ass when it's all done. Are you going to do up the body and interior real nice? That could be one helluva a cool car.

Definitely! The original plan was to put it on the driver's side until I could plan a trunk mount. I still may do that, but it's not as pressing of an issue now.

I'm pretty happy with it. I just need to get the rear window sealed so no more water will go back there.

I'm not sure. Before that I want to have the rear filled with a 3.73 posi. Right now it's an open 2.56. It's a money thing too. I've been racking up some bills in the effort to get it together so quick. I've got a lot of trips over the next year that are going to cost me too. If it runs and drives fine, I'll stick with what's working.

It's nice. They're already set up to bolt anything from a straight 6 (although I think 1971 was the last year of those) through a Stage 1 455.

The fuel line wouldn't swap over though, just the size is the same. In fact a GS455 has a different pump than a GS455 Stage 1. The Stage pump has a deeper well. My fuel pump was designed to have the inlet and outlet stick straight out instead of straight down like factory. But it came with a 90 degree brass fitting, so I turned it down to accomodate the hard line.

The radiator is a 3 core. My GS455 had a 4 core. Fortunately it's pretty new as there is no scale in it. We'll find out how it cools. In the garage during cam break-in it liked to stay in the 210 degree range. We had two fans blowing on the motor, but that was the only airflow there was. It may work out alright. I may go with electric Crown Vic fans like my friend uses. He also runs a Meziere electric, but those are $$$.

I've got an 850 double pumper for it, but it's apart for rebuild. The Qjet was a known commodity and thus was chosen for the break-in. I have to give that back. I'm also going to need to make some room under the hood. I'll likely cut the stock Skylark hood and use a repro Buick Stage 2 scoop. I think I just found another shroud and throttle linkage too. If the linkage work, I'm going to give the extra to my friend to replace the universal Lokar cable he has. He doesn't really like the Lokar unit.

I'm not going to do it up real nice, but I'd like to make it a decent

10-footer, at least. I have another friend who paints cars, and I plan to have him help me do it. The interior has an Olds Cutlass split bench with armrest. It's in excellent shape, but I'm likely going to go with race buckets. I'd kind of like to get some old early 70's van buckets (like the Mopars used) and have them upholstered similar to the stock setup. I've got some "Custom455" emblems from a LeSabre too. I want to put them in place of the original "Custom" emblems as to be the only thing indicating what's under the hood. Sort of like the Skylark that Buick never built - the Custom455. We'll see how it all plays out.

All in all it sounds real nice, Steve. Sounds like you finally got the ride you've been looking for all along. ;)

Best of luck with it and be sure to update the group with your progress. Pix of the finished product would be very cool..

I was hoping to have a forged piston short block with closer to 10:1 compression. If that were the case, I would have gone a couple of cams bigger. Oh well, I just need it to stay together for a couple of years now.

Once I get it home, I'll take some more photos.
