Ping: Jim Warman

Hi Jim,

Can you give me an idea of the cost of a gear swap in my 03 GT? There's a performance shop in Calgary that wants to charge me over a grand to do this.

You know of any reputable shops in Calgary that would be more reasonably priced?

Cheers, Kenny

Butting in here.

Run, don't walk in any other direction! Cripes thats close to what Ford service quoted me. For what it's worth:

3.73 Precision gears $269 + taxes (Cdn) - DaSilva Racing Install $275 + taxes (Cdn) - shop recommended by Joe DaSilva Time 1.5 hrs. Now this is around and about Toronto, but prices gotta be comparable out west. I'd hope so anyways.

1.5 hours for the change seems a little short. I can't see the job being done properly in much less than 3.5 hours although the install cost of $275.00 would imply a time of closer to 3.5 hours @ $78.57/hr. Don't forget all the other little things from axle seals. gear oil, friction modifier speedo recalibration, maybe a axle bearing kit. This will add another $200.00.

These guys are specialists, all they do is performance trans etc. s'where DaSilva has his work done (for what that's worth). Maybe time was closer to 2 hours, but wasn't near 3.

Forgot I bought the gear oil at DaSilva's at the same time. $30 No speedo recal, soooo a recal module is what $150 or so?

Still isn't near the $1000 mark.

Minja, if they pop in something like a Diablo chip that would do it. But I didn't buy one for the recal.

Here's the reply I got when I questioned the quote...

Hi there, the gears are close to 375, the bearing rebuilt kit is approximately 275.00 their is approximately 6 hours to remove, install new bearings, set up the pattern, then you have you fluids and gst, so pretty close. it would certainly be a little less, but you need that bearing rebuilt kit, too dangerous to press off the bearings and reinstall them, I know we won't take that chance.

Sorry for the late reply, Kenny.... seems to me I recall 4.5 hours for a ring and pinion..... naturally, this is Ford time for a Ford supplied ring and pinion.... I have encountered difficulties getting a good pattern with some of the aftermarket gear set-ups..... It can be a real snake pit with customer supplied parts..... the equation can seem complicated.

In a nutshell..... if you supply the gears, we guarranty that the bolts are tight..... if we supply the gears, we guarranty that the job is right.....Like anything else in life, auto parts have a wide range of quality assurances.

In deepest, darkest Cowtown, I would expect labour charges of 400ish loonies..... my own preference would be to rebearing the works, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with re-using existing "good" bearings. You're asking the wrong guy about "reasonably priced". Look for a shop with a big door rate and a full parking lot - these guys are in the business of making people happy. Low ball shops seem to come across problem after problem that drives the ultimate price through the ceiling...... of course, we are still shopping price and receiving a substandard result ....

If a shop is good, do you think they will be cheap?

Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

I certainly don't want to low ball anything on my GT, I just want to make sure that I'm not getting taken to the cleaners either.

I haven't been in the 'mod' market long enough to establish a relationship with a shop yet, so I was simply looking for an informed opinion. I appreciate and trust the advice you've offered me in the past. Thanks for the info.

Cheers!
