PING: Mustangguy -- Fan stays on after car is shut off

To everybody else reading... I have a 98 Mustang GT.. and my radiator fan is staying on even after the car is shut off. This has happened before & I simply wired in a switch to turn it on/off & it worked like a charm... until now. For some reason.. it's acting up again. I believe we thought it was the CCRM before (Tim... u take paypal?).. I'm gonna get the CCRM letter sometime very soon.. going to toy with the switch today .. thinking maybe a wire came loose or something. Anybody have any ideas?

I am pretty sure most factory electric fans are designed to run when the engine is turned off. I'm still in the dark ages with my belt driven fan in my '87, but I've seen many cars continue to run the electric fan for a couple minutes after a hot car has been shut off to help cool it down faster I would suppose.

No... it's not supposed to stay on after. Mine never did. I fixed the problem.. bad ground on my switch. Thanks anyway.

Mike,

Your car's electric fan is connected to a thermostat inside the radiator. When the temperature inside the radiator goes over a pre-set degree the fan automatically clicks on regardless whether the ignition is turned off or not. It'll click off as soon as the radiator cools off a little. With the season's warmer temperatures, you will notice the fan staying on more often; however, this is normal. Leave it alone... There's no need to "fix it".

No thermostat in the radiator... It determines when the fan should run by the temp sensor in the engine block.

Many rice rockets do indeed work the way you describe. (stat IN the rad).

Patrick, I thought so too... but it stayed on for hours & the battery drained.. it was a problem & I did manage to fix it. I still think the CCRM is the culprit & I need to get a new one...

Yeah I thought it was the engine coolant temp. sensor(s).. so I replaced it (I think just 1--was a while back I don't recall exactly).. it wasn't (in MY situation).

** When the temperature inside the radiator goes over a ** pre-set degree the fan automatically clicks on regardless whether the ** ignition is turned off or not.

My '98 GT's electric fan is never energized after the ignition is switched off, regardless of engine temperature.

JD,

Do you live in a cool climate? My wife's Honda rarely clicks on after the ignition is turned off, but will on warm days if the car has been run fairly hard before shut off.

I'm in central CA, and it's usually pretty warm. Even on 105+ degree days during the summer, I've never seen my cooling fan remain running after I've shut down the ignition.

Did you get this figured out ? Did you still need that CCRM, if so I need the letter of the cover.

Thanks,

I fixed it... but I still am going to want to replace the CCRM sometime.. I'll drag my ass under there eventually. You'll be the first to know when I know the code. Thanks, Tim.

How again did you repair it?

Tim was very kind to me before & showed me a web-site that showed me how to wire in a switch to my high-speed electric fan... so *I* control when the fan is on/off rather than the CCRM alone. It was fairly easy... hardest part was finding the wire & stripping a section of it.. it turned out to be 2 bad grounds (wires broke.. stiff friggin wire). So I fixed those grounds & the switch worked again... hence turning the fan off when the engine is off =).

has an articleabout installing a manual fan switch.

The CCRM is Constant Control Relay Module, this module houses relays for : computer power, fuel pump, A/C clutch, and electric radiator fan.

Know of any good articles to add an electric fan to an 89 5.0 ??

What diameter fan is needed ?? I have a 15" electric fan I was going to put in my 89. Is this large enough ??

Where can I get a thermoswitch for it ??
