You can often figure out what the posters are using by the X-Newsereader or User-Agent header if you inspect the headers.
I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird these days.
Dana
I use OE6 as well, however I have used Agent and its really nice
Dave
I use Outlook Express 6 as well. Can't beat it IMHO.
Outlook Express. Great user interface and you can keep track of email at the same time.
I love it, and refuse to give it up until Uncle Bill destroys it.

Absolutely. It's the best there is...
... according to worm and virus authors worldwide.
Anyone else get 3000 Swen messages lately? None of those are coming from my home network.

All things Mozilla can be found starting at:
You might just try Mozilla 1.5 for a fully-integrated browser/mail/news/composer. It's a little more mature than T-Bird in terms of installation.

PAN (linux)
I'm still using Agent, but I might give Mozilla Thunderbird a shot. I can't use the full Mozilla product because I don't have enough horsepower under the hood of my old computer; the only browser fast enough for my ancient old P-Pro
200 is Opera.-JD

XNews, It's free, powerful and pretty stable. Loads of handy features.

Dang JD! Why not break down and get a new one?
Kate
Outlook Express 6 for email and news.
OE sucks for news. Try Xnews - it's a free download:

No way! I gave up the 'upgrade' race a long time ago, and vowed not to purchase new hardware unless it was absolutely neccessary.
I'm the only bastage that still clings to Windows 95b, and this particular computer only cost me $3.50 a few years ago. Compared to the 386-40 it replaced in 2001, it's a speed demon. (Yes, I used Windows 3.11 on the 386.)
It's not THAT bad! I put in 128K RAM, 40GB hard drive, a Yamaha CD burner, and it has sound and an embedded 2MB video chip inside. I even have a newer NEC flat-panel display on top. Oh yes, it's one of the older desktop-style cases that I've always loved. And it has a lightning-fast Pentium Pro 200 chip on an Intel AP-440-FX mainboard, which was pretty high-tech for it's day.
I'm considering buying a used IBM desktop later this year, perhaps with one of those PII-400 chips. That should be fast enough to run Mozilla, and it should still be able to run Windows 95b. We'll see!
In the meantime, I still have a couple of beloved old 486-33's in the closet, loaded with DOS 7.0, ready to go. They're loaded with WordStar 5.0, Lotus
1-2-3 v2.01 and dBaseIII+. I miss the glory days of DOS!!-JD

Oh, come on- if you can't beat it, you're not trying hard enough. X-news, Agent, Gravity, and Mozilla (Netscape). Heck, even *Pine* would probably be better. ;)
Mozilla for reading & posting to text-only groups. Agent for downloading binaries from the e-book, audio book, and car pics groups.
KNode for KDE (Linux). All the features of Outlook, with no worms.
I've tried a couple of others recommended by folks in here, still am not impressed. I did not like the format. I did not like that my email was not integrated on the same software.
If you say OE sucks... lets hear some reasons WHY you think so, and what features make your reader better than OE.
"It Sucks" is not reason enough to go to the trouble to download and break in a new program.
