something interesting hasppened last night

Whilst racing from stoplight to stoplight last night (Don't ask, I was in a mood) A Dodge pickup kicked my ass because the shift from 1st to 2nd was too quick (I hate auto trans) . At the 2nd light I dropped it into low 1 and we took off, I smoked him BUT when I hit around 4,500 rpm (guessing, I don't have a tach (yet)) the engine cut out. No response to the gas or anything. I finally turned off the key and restarted it (in neutral of course) and all was fine. This happened to me about a week ago on the freeway doing about 95 (Foot was still in it from a standing start) that time it died with no response from the gas pedal then backfired and started running again. My questions are 1: is there a way that a 65 Mustang would have a rev limiter installed and if so how would I find it? 2: If no rev limiter any ideas WTF happened? I mean electrical (where do I start) or fuel problem? I have a 650 Carter carb running 89 octane and sometimes it seems like its not getting enough gas.

Thanks

Maybe a fuel filter clogging up or the pump going south?

Either a clogged fuel filter, or a pump that isn't delivering enough volume or pressure. Check for a pinched fuel line as well.

Judging by the pics of your car it may be the massive amounts of rubber fuel line being sucked flat under hard demand. I'd look at replacing these with hard steel lines like factory. It's a lot safer or at least in the interim look for any that is old and spongey. Look under the car at the gas tank, rear torque box area and front torque box as well as the fuel pump feed line and any other rubber repair patches the P.O. may have installed. StuK
