Spark Plug Wires

Hi All,

I need to replace the above mentioned on my 1985 Mustang GT with a 5spd. Can anyone make some suggestions as to what kind would be the best in terms of performance? Please let me know. Thanks.

First, you won't really gain any performance by changing plug wires. Unless yours are really, really bad. Then you're restoring power, and not gaining it. SO don't waste time (and money) looking for a performance plug wire. Second, bigger is not better. Your plug wires only need to be big enough handle the power of the ignition system. It would be like running a 00 battery cable to run your factory radio. It will work, but it's not necessary. The ignition will transfer only the amount of power needed to create a spark. In an essentially stock engine, stock plug wires work just as well as high dollar racing wires.

I've used Summit 8.0mm wires on many vehicle with excellent results. They are cheap ($35), and you build them yourself. So they fit everything exactly the way you want them to.

I've used the FMS wires sets a few times and never had problems. Taylor is good as well.

I got a set of MSD wires from Jegs

Pricey at about 70 bux, but they don't burn up or break or wear out like regular auto parts store wires. Also, the boots and wires don't seperate when you attempt to pull the boot off plugs for a change/check.

All in all, very pleased with MSD wires.

I paid $40 for my Taylor wires that are made to fit my car specifically.

The reason Ford recommends using stock parts is because their parts are designed as OEM parts, Ignition parts are designed to integrate with in the tolerances of the ECM. All Ford performance vehicles are designed with hi energy ignitions so its superfolous to purchase so called "Performance " Enhanced wires, ignitions, coils etc. Hope this helps

Ok, whatever. OEM parts are not always the best replacement parts available. A manufacturer has to make a compromise between cost and reliability, the bottom dollar always counts. Ford even knows this and has a Performance Parts division. Are there better parts out there? Yes. Do they cost more? Sometimes. Will they work as good or better than OEM? Yes, usually better. Ford recomends OEM parts for a few reasons, none of which have anything to do with OEM parts being the best available. It's true that a stock motor needs nothing more than "stock" wires but there are many "stock replacement" wires that are as good as or better than the OEM wires. Like your answer to another post about the factory springs and ride height of the Mustang, what a joke. The '94+ Mustangs look like 4X4's, their suspension components are a compromise for the mass market. Replacing the factory suspension with the proper, read "not slammed" aftermarket suspension componets (actually the OEM "Bullitt" stuff is a good deal) will greatly improve the ride, handling, and the look of the fox 4 Mustangs.

I am sure they do.

How is that?

Sorry Wraith, you have me mixed up with another thread and another poster concerning springs and suspension of which I have no experience! I do have some experience with ignitions and motors and strive to give the most cost effective and reliable answers to peoples questions. As I stated, your best result is always to go with Motorcraft parts. There are several reasons: A) This is most important.. They work! B) They fit. C) There is no guess work in the calibration. D) OEM parts are designed to work in build cars on the assembly floor.

Most of which has absolutely nothing to do with a 400+HP Car. So, when I add a blower to my car you would have me not change out to a high flow fuel pump? How ignorant is it to think that the OEM fuel pump for an 89 Mustang will still perform the necessary task after adding a blower? No that will not work. Sparkplugs have to be "calibrated" no matter what brand you buy. I'm not sure who brainwashed you into thinking that you should always stick with OEM parts, but when it comes to high performance build that's not particularly true.

WindsorFox, your comments are appreciated but are off topic concerning the original posters request for ignition wire replacement. The original poster from my understanding has a stock automobile so my response was based on her available info. She was not running any hi performance mod ie: Supercharger, blower etc. As I remember she does not have a 400 hp vehicle. As for your comment on Ford Motorcraft spark plugs, they come gapped to the correct specs.

A supercharger is a blower, afaik. Also, I bought Motorcraft plugs & they weren't gapped the way they were supposed to be...

You ASSume there is no high performance equipment. There is nothing to indicate one way or another. A set of Taylor HP wires or FMS wires will be better than the standard OEM wire period, no ifs ands or buts. NGK plugs are better than Motorcraft plugs, period, no ifs ands or buts. And if you poke a pair of plugs into your engine without checking the gap, I have a bridge for sale too. Off topic, indeed....
