torque converter c4 question/problem

Hello

I was given a c4 tranmission that was pulled out of a old truck. i was told it worked. Also i got a rebuild torque converter for it. My problem i have now is. When i put it into any gear the engine will stall. Im guessing the torque converter is stuck is some way or another. The engine has to idle around 700-800 rpm(because of cam). After looking up even the stock converters stall at 1800 so i should be ok on idle. right?

My question is. Is there anything in the tranmission that would stall the engine when i put it into gear. the c4 is a nonlockup tranmission, (right?) So it would have to be the converter ?

If you look in any repair manual, in the tune up section, it tells you to set the idle with an automatic transmission in gear. That is if it is non-computer controlled. If it is computer controlled, follow the instructions for your model year. Mine is non-computer controlled, and I have mine set to idle around 800 rpms with tranny in gear. In park it idles a little over 1000 rpms.
