Brands picked for narcissistic reasons

French researchers say we pick certain brand names for an entirely narcissistic reason: they contain letters of the alphabet that are in our own name.

The theory is an extension of the "name letter effect," which has demonstrated that people indeed like the letters in their name more so than others letters. The current research extends that phenomenon to consumerism and defines "name letter branding," which shows a connection between a consumer's name and the brands one chooses.

"In our experiments, respondents were more likely to choose a brand when its name included name letters than when it did not," said C. Miguel Brendl, an assistant professor of marketing and the director of the INSEAD Social Science Research Center in Paris.

Brendl and colleagues said they found name letter branding influences choices only under one of two conditions: Either consumers have a need to enhance their self-esteem because of a threatening situation or when consumers have to have a product relevant need, for example a need to drink when choosing a beverage.

The study is detailed in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Consumer Research.

Do we really "like" the letters more, or is it that we use them more often and are therefore more familiar on a subconscious level? I think the study may be flawed......

Freaking BS!

Maybe it DOES apply to the French.... but then what does that say about them that we dont know already?!!!

There's tons of product that bear my last name... but never had it on my tires... and I wouldnt buy their residential equipment.

While I have everything but 'U" in my last name, I got my first Mustang at the age of 40 and had SEVERAL performance cars before that.

And my brothers all drive chebbys

Know what sounds sweet? : 0 ) an installed engine with the parts right.... water pump (new from Kragen) was leaking and had to be replaced. Flexplate had some worn teeth and had to be replaced. Starter was giving out and was replaced. The vacuum advance that was frozen was replaced. Kept the spark plug wires : 0 ) But, the engine is back in, and the 4v is tweaked. And NyTmArE is parked in the garage.. ready to run free... well... not free.... the above was $1559, and gas is still running $2.699 for midrange.....

Did I say "French Fires"? I think not. I do believe I simply said, "While today their immigrant population makes the fires....". Indeed, it was you who said "French fires"... which would indicate what was in your mind. So, I must accept that by, "...pretty pathetic," you must have been referring to yourself. Personally, I kinda liked your observation about "French fires"... I am sure one of the many placed burned must have had some spuds...
