'89 nissan sunny screeching sound on start up

I find that my 1.6 1989 Nissan Sunny always screeches without starting if I turn the key too soon. If I leave the key in the ON position so that the petrol guage reaches the right level, then the car will start properly. Is there something I can do about this? It's a real pain in the butt waiting a couple of minutes to get the car going, especially if I have to move off quickly.
