Nissan 300ZX Starter Problems

Have an '87 Nissan 300ZX 2+2, (Non Turbo) with 160k. I'm second owner, as first owner is 10 years older than I and, consequently, had finished his mid life crisis and no longer needed the vehicle just when I was entering mine. Bought it in '00 and have had very little trouble with it.

Anyway, about two weeks ago, starter began to sound "tired" in that it would always start, but just barley, at times, turn over. Engine would catch right away, but starter seemed like it was going to die during the 2 seconds it was cranking. Seems to happen more when vehicle is hot. Battery was replaced (3 yrs. old and prorated for 6) at Advance Auto as their diag. showd "bad battery." Took it back to them to check alternator, and it checks out fine. All other electonics work fine.

Does this sound like starter motor needs to be replaced or mabe solenoid? I've tried to find similar problem on the net, but seem to find situations of no starter, etc., and not the "tired" starter that I seem to be experiencing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Maybe not. Check the battery voltage with the engine off and the lights on (load). Also I would not rule out cable corrosion. Advance Auto diag is crapshoot in their favor. Thought I had a bad alternator had it run on their tester. They said was bad. I said let's run you new boxed one on your tester-was bad too. Repaired ground wire on my wiring harness. Greyhound

I would certainly check all connections as Greyhound has said... and then give the battery a comprehensive load test. Do not think that just because the battery is only half through it's pro-rated life... that it couldn't be faulty.
