Re: Question on Nissan OEM struts

that is a normal condition.

all a strut does is dampen the up and down movement of the front suspension when going over bumps in the road, it does not do any supporting or holding up of the front or rear end of the car , that is what the springs are for.

Just for fun, unpack one of the struts, grab a hold the ram ( the rod as you called it) and give it a quick and sudden pull, you will find that it does not extend very fast all all.

I just purchased a pair of OEM front struts for '91 Maxima SE from a > Nissan dealer. The markings on them are 54302-96E10 and 54303-99E00. > When I unpacked the struts I noticed that it doesn't take much force > to compress them. In fact, I can compress the rods with my fingers, > although one of them is tighter than the other. Is this normal? Thanks for your replies. I had aftermarket struts in my car before but I decided to bring it back to stock thus the OEM struts. The problem with all aftermarket units is that they don't offer the same ride as the car was designed for. Struts are part of the complex equation that include tires, wheels size, springs, bushings, etc and if you change either one of them you'd need to compensate by changing other components as well. And this is something I'd rather leave to the engineers who designed my car :)) Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that Nissan uses Tokico as its OEM supplier for the Maxima struts and maybe other models as well.

I feel you on keeping your car stock. The engineers who design and build these cars invest considerable time, money, and effort to achieve a certain balance. Yes, I can add mods to increase performance or increase lateral stability, but how will that affect low end torque and ride on a gravel road? However, I have to admit that I will add aftermarket, sport wheels for enhanced appearance.
