I recently bought a used engine and plan to do a swap myself in the near future. I read my chilton's front to cover and was wondering if there was anyone out there who had experience with this car. If there is a website that has pictures and a write up that would be great. I know the size of task I'm taking on, just want some advice or maybe tricks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Only problem might be hurry... Read link below. Chilton is crap, so carefully read 'Favorite Links on the mentioned page.
Clic there also 'Friends' Phasta's pages for writeup on tranny change.
Replace cam belt and o-rings before installation. Waterpump if over 100k miles. If you are keeping the car, replace exhaust manifold bolts, hi quality (Originals are prone to break)
I assume you will be using a cherry picker/balance bar to remove the engine. Pull off the hood and set it on the roof, protected by a blanket. Clean off everything with gunk engine spray or similar, especially on the bottom side. After drying, spray all nuts and bolts with liquid wrench or similar 1 day ahead of time, especially on the exhaust system. Take lots of pictures of everything for future reference. Get as many angles as possible. Drain tranny oil prior to pulling half shafts. Drain radiator fluid and remove the radiator/fan shroud. Drain engine oil. If swapping over accessory parts, do so while both engines are removed. Use air tools if at all possible. Do a complete tune-up on the new engine. Check/repair/replace the exhaust manifold studs prior to install. Should take 4-5 hours to pull engine and 2-3 times as long for complete re-install. If manual tranny, replace the clutch. Don't forget to replace the tranny seals for the CV joints. Get new exhaust doughnut gaskets. How are your 02 sensors? Buy a new box of band-aids. Get a big cup and fill with favorite beverage. Good luck.
