K&N drop in filter, any difference over regular ait filter

are there any benefits to putting a K&N drop in filter instead of the standard nissan or an aftermarket substuite (say from or whatever)? any bad things about these K&N filters? Was thinking about an cold air intake but don't want to have to be replacing my MAF at 400 bucks a pop. are there any intakes (CAI or "pop charger" kind) that don't harm, or at least arn't as bad to MAF's? thanks a lot. this filter is for a 2k1 max SE

If you don't want to risk damage to the MAF, stick with -nissan- filters. Don't be tempted to save a few bucks using 3rd party air filters unless you want to be a beta tester for their filters!

I don't believe you would ever notice any peformance difference and if a simple air filter would give the performance some people cliam, why wouldn't nissan use them to give their engines bigger brag/sales HP numbers instead of expencive hardware? If you believe some of the claims (using a

90 300zx NA as an example), an air filter, a computer upgrade and underdrive pulleys would make it as fast as a twin turbo!

That oil from the K&N gets to your MAF, you will be sorry.........just stick with the paper Nissan filter.

the "3rd party" filters work just fine on the car with absolutely no possibility of causing damage to the vehicle. And to be a beta tester is long done with as the filter has been in production for 10+ years.

If by 3rd Party you mean Purolator, Fram, etc. air filters, I agree that they're probably fine. But if you mean oiled filters such as the K&N, it's only a matter of time...

Your choice. Seen too many not seal corectly to the housing or the rubber seal fail and ruin the meters. Not worth the very small $$ you save considering how long the filters last in these cars. How much will you save over the life of the car, $20-$30? Again you're call, I just don't see the very minor savings worth the risk.

IMO, get a $3 - $4 paper filter and replace it religiously every 3000 miles. My '98 has absolutely no problems going where I need it to.

If you really want HP increase, then go turbo.

If you REALLY REALLY want HP, then buy yourself a SVT Cobra.

Or a real nissan one and change it every 15,000-30,000.

He should have said 10-15k and it makes no difference who makes it as far as change frequency goes

I personally change it about every four to five months or 10,000 miles. I just know of some people who like to go really overboard and change very 3K miles.

That would have to be 3000 very, very dusty miles. Mine looks only slightly dirty when I change it at 15k. Unless your filters are really dirty at 15k it's a total waste to change sooner.
